I founded Futures Empowered to explore how higher education can better prepare students and institutions for an uncertain future.

My work through Futures Empowered focuses on the future of employability, the role of the humanities in higher education, leader development, and strategic foresight. These interests reflect a career spent at the intersection of higher education, philosophy, strategy, and leadership.

I spent nearly two decades at the United States Military Academy (West Point), where I served as Professor of Higher Education, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Department Head of English and Philosophy, and Associate Dean for Strategy and Initiatives. I led the development of two academic strategic plans and major curriculum and assessment initiatives. I also served for 33 years as a U.S. Army officer, retiring as a colonel.

I believe higher education should help students live a good life, prepare for meaningful work, and contribute as citizens. Institutions should not have to choose between workforce preparation and education for its own sake. Much of my writing explores what that means as AI, changing work, demographic pressures, and other forces reshape higher education.

Futures Empowered is where I share that thinking.
